Chapter 13, The Odyssey

Part one
Finally Odysseus’s journey is over and he is able to go back to his home town of Ithaca. On his journey home he, “slept in peace, the memory of his struggles laid to rest” (289). This day is a turning point and an end to all struggles. But Poseidon is not pleased with the Phaeacians for helping Odysseus, so he asks Zeus if he can punish them. He “stuck (the ship) to stone, rooted her to the ocean floor and made for open sea” (291). The prophecy from years ago came true. On the land of Ithaca Odysseus awakes and thinks that the Phaeacians dropped him off on “no man’s land” and he is appalled. He trusted these people and does not understand why they would play a trick on him. Athena then appears, disguised as a shepard, and convinces Odysseus that it is the land of Ithaca and it is time to, “plot the death of the high and mighty suitors” (298). To do this Odysseus needs to be in disguise, so she transforms him into a beggar.

Why was Odysseus so quick to accuse the Phaeacians when he did not recognize his hometown of Ithaca? Was it because of a lack of trust or something else?

Part two
Odysseus journey home was very peacful; he was able to sleep the whole way there. Odysseus’s sleep was, “the sweetest, soundest oblivion, still as the sleep of death itself” (289). Odysseus was finally able to sleep in peace. He had nothing else to worry about. His crew was gone, sad but also less to worry over, and after years of being stranded his journey and hard times were over. He could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, which his sleep resembled. The ship Odysseus and the Phaeacians sailed on seemed like the strongest ship a person could have, which is also why Odysseus slept in peace. The ship was, “like a four-horse team careering down the plain… leaping with hoofs high to run the course in no time…” (289). This epic simile uses imagery and personification to help enhance the ships beauty and safety, which leads to Odysseus trusting the Phaeacians. This leads to the question that was brought up before on why Odysseus blamed the Phaeacians when he awoke. Later in this chapter Athena explains to Odysseus that, “no man, no woman, not a soul” should find out that he is, “the wanderer home at last. In silence (he) must bear a world of pain, subject (himself) to the cruel abuse of man” (296). Athena then changes Odysseus into a completely different person so not a soul will recognize him. Odysseus seems fine with this but if I were him I would not want to do it. After coming home from years and years of “torture” the first thing I would want to do is see my family, and how could Odysseus do that if he is a different person. He can not even come home and enjoy what he has missed because he has to fight off the suitors. Athena states that he must bear a world of pain, so is she saying that being out at sea was not enough torture for him?

Is changing Odysseus’s identity, so he is able to attack the suitors, a punishment for what he has done out at sea or is it something that had to be done for him to get his life back? Is Odysseus’ identity something he values?

Part three
Identity is an important issue today as it is in The Odyssey. In The Odyssey, identity is an issue that is valued in some circumstances but not at all important in others. In previous chapters Odysseus hides his identity until he absolutely needs to share with everyone who he is. He at first does not tell the Phaeceians who he is, and with the Cyclopes he tell his real name only when his crew and him escape from his island. Odysseus uses his identity to an advantage in some cases because he knows it will make him look like a better person. In other parts of the Odyssey, one’s identity is changed, which makes it seem like identity is not valued at all. In book thirteen alone we see identity change twice. Athena is in disguise when she first meets Odysseus at Ithaca, and also Odysseus’s identity is changed so he can get rid of the suitors. People act differently when certain people are around so disguising ones true identity can be used to an advantage, but then true identity is not valued. But also when a person disguises their true identity they end up learning something new about themselves. Is this why identity change is an occurring theme in The Odyssey? Today many people struggle with who they really are, and the only way to act “them selves” is to hide who they really are. Recently in society some students have been made fun of so much, because of who they really are, they had to take their lives because their true identity was not acceptable. This article describes how one student’s true identity was hidden and when revealed he could not go on living. Because of this, is true identity valued in society or is it better to not act lie yourself?

Is identity valued in The Odyssey and in real life? What purpose does disguising ones identity have and is it worth it?

Dangerous Yet Fragile

In life many things are perceived to be dangerous, but really they are the most delicate, harmless things in the world. Lets take a rose for example. A rose is a flower that represents love. It has hundreds of delicate pedals but yet when touched a person is cut with its thorn. Nora is just like a rose. The thorns protect her secret and act as a shell that Nora can hide behind to keep her secret safe. But really Nora is a delicate pedal. She only acts a certain way because just like thorns are supposed to protect the rose, she has to protect her secret.

Some animals also are perceived as dangerous but really they are harmless. When a person thinks of sharks they think of death. But really only some sharks kill humans. The basking shark is a great example. The basking shark is the second largest animal in the world. It can grow up to thirty-three feet and weigh up to four tons. When seen, most people begin to freak but this shark is a filter feeder. It will not attack a human. Animals just like the basking shark all have one thing in common, they represent Nora of course. When just looking at Nora all you see is her exterior. You think of a " well off" woman with a great marriage. But deep down the truth about her is hidden just like these animals. Today a person judges another person or object in less than a second, and that is why appearance is so important in today's society. When a person does this though they miss the whole truth. They look at the basking shark and think run, they look at Nora and think perfect, but really the exterior of almost everything is just a mask to hide under. It is a false accusation of who someone really is.

These other animals also are harmless but are perceived as dangerous.

I am not what you see

So I am sitting in the car with my dad and I ask to to turn the radio on. He puts on his favorite station and the song Mr. Roboto, by Styx, starts playing. As he is about to change the station so he can listen to sports radio I ask him to stop. I realized that this song is a perfect representation of Nora.

Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Mata ahoo Hima de
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Himitsu wo Shiri tai

You're wondering who I am
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
Machine or mannequin
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
With parts made in Japan
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
I am the modern man

I've got a secret, I've been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling
My brain I.B.M., so if you see me
Acting strangely, don't be surprised

I'm just a man who needed someone
And somewhere to hide
To keep me alive, just keep me alive
Somewhere to hide to keep me alive

I'm not a robot without emotions
I'm not what you see
I've come to help you
With your problems, so we can be free
I'm not a hero, I'm not a saviour
Forget what you know

I'm just a man whose circumstances
Went beyond his control
Beyond my control, we all need control
I need control, we all need control

I am the modern man
(Secret, secret I've got a secret)
Who hides behind a mask
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
So no one else can see
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
My true identity

Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Domo, Domo
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Domo, Domo

Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto

Thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For doing the jobs that nobody wants to
And thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For helping me escape

Just when I needed to
Thank you, thank you, thank you
I want to thank you
Please, thank you, oh

The problem's plain to see
Too much technology
Machines to save our lives
Machines, de-humanize

The time has come at last
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
To throw away this mask
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
Now everyone can see
(Secret, secret, I've got a secret)
My true identity, I'm Kilroy, Kilroy, Kilroy, Kilroy

Nora is just like Mr. Roboto. Mr. Roboto is, "not what you see, (he has) come to help you, with your problems, so we can be free. (He is) not a hero, not a saviour" he is just doing the deed because that is what he should do. Nora acts the same way. She forged the signature because it would make all the problems in her life go away. Her husband was ill and without her signature he would not get better. She did it for the good of all. Mr. Roboto also considers himself a regular man who hides behind a mask so his true identity is not revealed. Again Nora acts the same way. Her whole is is under a disguise because no one can find out her secret. She believes that when her secret is revealed everyone, especially her husband, will treat her differently. This does come true at the end. When Helmer opens the letter revealing Nora's secret he is in an outrage. He calls her a criminal and insists that she should get out of his sight. He will not even take the blame for what she did, which proves how their marriage is not the perfect marriage. Just like Mr. Roboto, Nora reveals her secret which was the best thing she has ever done.

Searching for the clues

So my papa came over a few days ago and when he had some downtime he decided to pull out his book of puzzle books. As we sat at the kitchen table trying to decided which puzzle we were going to work on, I realized that Nora's life is just like a puzzle, a word-search to be exact. In a word-search you have to look for a designated word in a pile of letters. The designated word is hidden or disguised behind other words and letters. Nora's life is the exact same way. Her secret is like a word hidden among many other things in her life that are not true. In others eyes Nora has a perfect marriage, but really her life is hidden. People can search and search for what her real life is like, but her secrets are well masked. Only a few people can search and find the hidden truth, but dare not to tell others. Nora has many hidden truths which can all be put into a word-search that will allow only a few to look and find her answers.

PERFECTMARRIAGE
RELATIONSHIPS
LOVE
SIGNATURE
BANKRUPT
FAMILYLIFE
ENJOYMENT
SAVIOR
CHILDRENSLOVE
HARMLESS
DISGUISE
HIDDEN
PERFECT
CONTROLLED
PUPPET

When thinking of Nora, secrets consume her everyday life. People think she has a perfect marriage, but really she is controlled everyday and is treated like a puppet. Her actions are a disguise for who she is because she has to worry about hiding her secret. All these words represent Nora and her life and what she goes through on a daily basis. They are in disguise though because just like Nora,  they hide the truth.
